Indonesia Lifts Decade-Old Reddit Ban, But Filtering Persists

Reddit returned to Indonesian screens in July 2026, ending a block that had lasted more than ten years. The reversal came after Reddit agreed to hide gambling and adult content from users inside the country, a condition set by Komdigi, the ministry that runs Indonesia's internet filtering system. Such reversals are unusual: Komdigi still blocks adult sites, gambling platforms, and services that have not registered as electronic system operators, and it moves quickly against anything it judges noncompliant.
A Filter That Keeps Shifting
The Reddit case illustrates how unpredictable Indonesia's internet rules have become. Earlier in 2026, Komdigi blocked the AI chatbot Grok over AI-generated sexual images, restoring access only after conditions were met. Wikimedia Commons went dark for a single day in March 2026 amid a registration dispute. PayPal, Steam, and Epic Games faced a similar fate in 2022 when they missed a registration deadline. The pattern suggests that access to any given platform in Indonesia is conditional, not guaranteed, and can change with little warning.
This is where a VPN becomes relevant for ordinary users, not just activists or technologists. A VPN routes a device's internet traffic through an encrypted tunnel to a server in another location, making it appear as though the connection originates there. Inside Indonesia, that means a filtered site becomes reachable and an internet provider can no longer see which domains a person visits, since the traffic, including DNS lookups, is encrypted end to end. Some Indonesian ISPs have also moved to block encrypted DNS directly, which makes the broader encryption a VPN provides more significant than simply unblocking a webpage.
Why Obfuscation Matters on Filtered Networks
Not every VPN connection looks the same to a network operator. Standard VPN traffic has recognizable characteristics that some national filtering systems can detect and block outright. To get around this, providers build obfuscation features that disguise VPN traffic as ordinary encrypted web browsing, the kind used for everyday secure sites. This matters in a country where the authorities have already blocked popular free VPN apps used to evade gambling restrictions and have discussed requiring VPN companies to register. A VPN with obfuscation built into its protocol, rather than added as a manual option, is simply more resilient against these shifts.
The legal status of VPNs themselves in Indonesia is not in question: using a paid VPN is legal, and what happens over that connection still falls under existing law, including the ITE Law covering defamation and illegal content. Free VPNs occupy murkier territory, since several were blocked in 2024 for enabling gambling access, and officials have signaled more scrutiny is coming.
The Reverse Problem: Reaching Indonesian Content Abroad
VPNs solve a second, less obvious problem for Indonesians living or traveling outside the country. Streaming services such as Vidio restrict channels like SCTV, Indosiar, and Moji to Indonesian IP addresses, and Netflix serves a different, geographically restricted catalog depending on location. Connecting to a server in Jakarta allows these services to treat a foreign-based device as a local one. This works well on some providers and not at all on others, since not every VPN company maintains enough Indonesian server capacity or the technical workaround needed to beat streaming platforms' location checks.
Why the List of Blocked Sites Keeps Growing, Then Shrinking
Indonesia's filtering regime rests on two pillars: a national inspection system that examines traffic for blocked domains, and a 2020 rule requiring any platform serving Indonesian users to register as an electronic system operator. Adult content and gambling sites are blocked under long-standing law; registration failures or content disputes drive the more unpredictable blocks, like those affecting Wikimedia Commons or Grok. Reddit's decade-long absence and sudden return shows that negotiation between a platform and the ministry can eventually succeed, but there is no fixed timeline and no guarantee for the next service caught in the same situation.
For users, the practical takeaway is less about any single blocked site and more about resilience: a VPN with strong encryption, proven obfuscation, and a no-logs policy that has faced independent scrutiny offers a stable way to maintain access and privacy regardless of which platform is affected next.
